Tactile Indicators

In Australia it has been acknowledged that there is a self-evident requirement to create a built environment with equal access opportunity for all. There are currently an estimated 375,000 people in Australia who are blind or vision impaired, and this number is projected to rise to 564,000 by 2030.

Tactile Ground Surface Indicators (TGSIs) provide physical and luminance contrasting cues, which, when combined with other environmental information, assists people who are blind or vision impaired with their orientation. Warning TGSIs are employed to indicate an approaching hazard, but not the nature of the hazard. Directional TGSIs provide a message to pause and consider a change of direction, or direct a safe route of passage.
